After our glitzy work on the Olympic & Paralympic ceremonies, the company behind the O2 arena approached Crystal CG and asked if we could do something about the fairly drastic state of the main entrance to one of Europe’s most successful music venues. Because of the disjointed way the dome was built and rebuilt, the steel and glass arena facade clashes somewhat with the faux-deco shop fronts and the industrial looking dome support beams. Our only real option was to create an installation with such an impact that it could cut through the noise.
The pendants are four-sided LED screens. When walking through the main door a cluster converges in your line of site to form one giant screen then disperses as you move through the space.
The display changes from interactive light installation to promotional billboard depending on the time of day and the footfall through the space.
The flat panel images and the converged cluster are only one part of the story, the depth allows the display to create movement through the space. An explosion of light in the center can ripple outwards like a weightless drop in a still pool or a wash of colour can cascade across the room with greater control than any lighting rig.
